7 Things You Should Know if You have Fibroid

Fibroid are non-cancerous tumors that grow in the walls of the uterus, they vary in sizes ranging from the size of a seed to that of melon and women can have a single or multiple fibroids.

In this article, we will be discussing 7 things you should know if you are living with fibroid or you suspect you might have a fibroid.

1)   Who gets fibroid and their causes

A fibroid is more common as a woman ages, especially in age 30s and 40s but it shrinks after menopause. it is also common in women who are overweight and those that consume more red meat.

The cause of fibroid is not clear but research shows that fibroids are controlled by the hormones estrogen and progesterone and that there is a hereditary component. which means having a family member with fibroid can increase your risk. It doesn’t mean you can’t have it if none of your family members has it before.

2)   What are the symptoms of fibroids?

Most often fibroid does not cause symptoms but if it does, they include:

  • pelvic pain and heavy menstrual bleeding that may lead to anemia or the need for a blood transfusion.
  • pressure on the bladder leading to frequent urination.
  • pressure on the rectum leading to constipation and back pain.
  • large fibroid push into the stomach area leading to bloating.
  • There are also reports of depression, anxiety, reduced quality of life, and distorted body image.
3)   How much bleeding is too much

Fibroid causes distortion of the endometrial cavity or womb which leads to heavy vaginal bleeding. but how will you be able to describe your bleeding as heavy? well, any amount of bleeding that interrupts your daily quality of life is a cause to worry. other red flags include:

  • bleeding between periods and having more than one period in a month.
  • Having a period that lasts longer than seven days
  • passing out blood clots that are larger than the size of a golf ball
  • soaking multiple pads in a short space of time

If you experience these symptoms, then you should see your doctor.

Uterine fibroid is noncancerous. There are very rare cases, where women develop a leiomyosarcoma, cancer that affects the uterus. It is not believed that this cancer can develop from fibroid and neither does fibroid increases your risk of developing a cancerous fibroid.
fibroid does not increase the risk of other cancer. postmenopausal women should see their doctor if they feel any newly growing tumors in their uterus, it could be something else because fibroids typically shrink after menopause

How fibroids affect fertility and pregnancy

Women with fibroid can have normal pregnancy but problems may arise due to the size and location of the fibroid which may affect the type of delivery you may have.

Fibroid does not interfere with ovulation neither do they affect your ability to get pregnant but if you have multiple fibroid or submucosal fibroid, they can make it difficult for the uterus to support conception and maintain pregnancy. It may even lead to infertility or loss of pregnancy.

Having fibroids while pregnant can increase your risk of complications during labor and delivery.

It is evident that fibroid won’t kill a woman but it can significantly impair the quality of a woman’s life. Some women give excuses for not wanting to go through the surgical removal of the tumor.
