Urinary Tract Infection: 5 Ways to Get Rid of it Without Antibiotic

urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria and that is why Doctors usually prescribe antibiotics for their treatment. UTI tends to reoccur and its more common in women.

Most often, Minor and uncomplicated UTI can be resolved by the body without the use of antibiotics. Complicated UTI will require treatment if infection involves one or more of these factors:

  • Urinary organ changes e.g. reduce flow of urine or swollen prostate
  • Bacteria are resistant to antibiotics
  • Conditions that affects the immune system, like HIV, lupus, or Cardiac disease.

It is however possible to get rid of UTI without antibiotic. We will be talking about some proven home remedies to get rid of urinary tract infection in this article.

firstly, lets explore the benefits and risk of antibiotics for UTI


Antibiotics are capable of killing the bacteria that causes the infection. they are the proven and standard treatment for UTI. the infection often develop when bacteria migrates to the urinary tract from outside the body. bacteria commonly responsible for UTI includes:

  • Escherichia coli species (causing 90% of all bladder infections)
  • Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae

It is true that Antibiotics is very effective in the treatment of UTIs but people can be allergic to them which can lead to certain risk.

Side effects of antibiotics as UTI treatments may include:

  • nausea and vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • a rash
  • a headache
  • abnormal liver
  • function tests

A more severe risks of using antibiotic include:

  1. Antibiotic Resistant

    when you use an antibiotics often and do not follow doctors prescription, it increases the risk of the bacteria developing resistance to it. as a result, there is need to reduce the use of antibiotic especially when illness can resolve on it own or with other treatment like natural remedies.

  2. Damaging Good Bacteria
    The body has it own good bacteria, viruses and fungi that assist the body functions. Antibiotic may destroy this bacteria in the process of killing the bad ones which can lead to recurring infection.

Ways to treat Urinary tract infection without Antibiotics

1) Stay Hydrated

Drink a lot of water, this will help the urinary organ to eliminate waste from the body while retaining essential nutrients and electrolytes. It will also help to dilute the urine and speed up it removal through the system making it difficult for the bacteria to attach to the lining of the urinary organs. You should at least drink 8-10 cups of water daily.

2) Use probiotics

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that keeps the urinary tract free from harmful bacteria and keep the tract healthy.

Lactobacilli (a group of probiotic) can help in preventing and also treating UTIs by:

  1. preventing harmful bacteria from attaching to urinary tract cells
  2. producing hydrogen peroxide in urine, which is a strong antibacterial
  3. lowering urine pH, making conditions less favorable for bacteria

probiotics occurs in fermented and dairy products such as:

  • Yogurts
  • fermented cassava product like garri, fufu, abacha and akpu.
  • fermented maize product like pap.
  • fermented millet products like Kunnu.
  • local condiments products like, dawadawa, and Africa locust beans.

3) Wipe From front to back

women should wipe from front to back after urinating or a bowel movement. this is to prevent the bacteria in the anus from gaining access to the Urethra. You can also wipe the genital and anus with separate pieces of toilet paper.

4) Urinate when you need to

Don’t hold up urine for long, always urinate soon as the need arises. Frequent urination helps to clear out bacteria in the urinary tract. it also reduces the risk of them attaching and forming infection in the urinary tract.

5) Practice good sexual hygiene

one of the easiest way microbes enter into the urinary tract from outside is through sexual intercourse. A good sexual hygiene may help, this include:

  1. Urinating before and immediately after sex
  2. using barrier contraception, such as a condom
  3. washing the genitals, especially the foreskin, before and after engaging in sexual acts or intercourse.
  4. washing the genitals or changing condoms if switching from anal sex to vaginal sex
  5. Ensuring that sexual partners are aware of any current or previous UTIs
